Basic comparisons with:像...一样

Along with 比 (bǐ) and 没有 (méiyǒu), 一样 (yīyàng) is another way to make basic comparisons. However, rather than expressing that two things differ regarding a particular quality, 一样 (yīyàng) is used to express that two things are the same in some way.The simple structure is used for stating that two things are equal: Noun 1 + 跟 / 和 + Noun 2 + 一样. For example,

  • 我跟你一样。I am like you.
  • 那里的天气和上海一样。The weather there and the weather in Shanghai are the same.
  • 你跟他不一样。You are not like him.
Please try to say the following sentences in Chinese:
  1. This book and that book are the same.
  2. Are tangerines and oranges the same?
  3. America and England are not alike.
  4. Is the meaning of this sentence and that sentence the same?
  5. Is the pronunciation of this character and that character the same?

To add an adjective into the mix, just place it after 一样 (yīyàng): Noun 1 + 跟 / 和 / 像 + Noun 2 + 一样 + AdjectiveThis describes Noun 1 as being as adjective as Noun 2. For example,

  • 他们和我们一样酷。They are as cool as we are.
  • 小狗和小猫一样可爱。Puppies and kittens are equally cute.
Please try to say the following sentences in Chinese:
  1. This apartment is just as big as that apartment.
  2. I am just as busy as you.
  3. Wang Peng and Li You are the same height.
  4. The weather here is just as hot as Shanghai.
