V+上 --- resultative verb
1. Upon, on (but not necessarily in an upwards direction; it emphasizes the result.)
他很生气地挂上了电话。Hang up
请把门窗关上。Close up
外面特别冷,把帽子戴上吧。Put on
大卫也要去,我们应该在名单上加上他的名字。 Add on
2. 上 used with a more abstract, idiomatic meaning (often having the idea of “attainment” of one’s goal)
他们家很高兴,因为他考上了名牌大学。(pass the exam)
我没赶上飞机。(fail in catching up with the plane)
他被选上当我们班的班长。(be chosen)
3. Approve of , satisfied with, give mental assent to (according to my criterion of what is suitable or appropriate)
他慢慢地爱上了这份工作。(Gradually approve of ,satisfied with)
那个姑娘很快就爱上了他。(Fall in love with, quickly in this sentence)
我在商场看上了一件红色大衣。(satisfied with,according to my criterion of what is suitable or appropriate)
