可以(kěyǐ) -- Expressing permission

可以(kěyǐ)  is often translated as "can" in English, but it is used to emphasize "to have permission to do something", so we can consider it as "may" to distinguish it from other auxiliary verbs. The basic structure is: Subject + 可以 + Verb + Object.

For example, 

• 她病好了，可以出院了。She is already recovered, so she can leave the hospital now. 
• 这儿不可以吸烟。Smoking is not allowed here.
• 他不满二十一周岁，不可以喝酒。He's not 21 years old yet, so he's not allowed to drink alcohol.
• 你可以给我打一个电话吗？Could you please give me a call?
• 你可以帮我一个忙吗？Can you please do me a favor?
