Verb measure words

Verb measure words (VMW) are used to show the number of times an action is carried out. The pattern is Subject + verb + number + VMW (+ objective).  There are not many of them compared with noun measure words, so the most important ten are listed in this blog:

1. 遍(biàn)：used to indicate the number of times an action is carried out in entirety. It is used to measure the action going through a completed process. 
• 请您再说一遍。Can you say it again?
• 这个歌很好听，我想再听一遍。This song is so pleasant. I want to listen one more time. 
2. 场(chǎng)：used for theatrical and artistic performances, movies, and sports activities.
• 今天晚上UB有一场橄榄球比赛。There will be a football match tonight at UB.
  
• 昨天晚上王朋和李友看了一场电影。Wang Peng and Li You watched a movie last night.
3. 次(cì)：used to indicate the number of times an action is performed. 这个电影我看了三次了。I've seen this movie three times.
• 他去过中国两次。He had been to China twice. 
• 我忘了他的电话号码，你能再告诉我一次吗？I forgot his number. Could you please tell me once more?
4. 顿(dùn)：used to indicate the number of times an action is performed. It is used mainly for the actions of eating, scolding, beating, and giving advice.
• 他一天只吃两顿饭。He only eats twice a day.
• 他被老板骂了一顿。He was scolded by the boss.
5. 番(fān)：used to indicate ,the number of times a relatively strenuous action is performed. 
• 他想了一番，写下了这个字。He thought for a while and wrote down this character. 
• 她仔细地看了一番，还是把那件大衣放下了。She looked thoroughly, and put down that jacket.
6. 回(huí)：used to indicate the number of times an action is per- formed. it is often used with.actions indicating motion, as coming or going.
• 我去过他们家两回。I have been to his home twice.
• 我到过一回斯坦福。I have been to Stanford once.
7. 下(xià)：used to indicate the number of times an action is per- formed. Used only with actions that take a short period of time to perform, like to hit or to press
• 你得敲几下门。You'd better knock the door a few times. 
• 您看一下，好吗？Can you take a look at this? 
8. 趟(tàng)：used to indicate the number of trips or journeys taken
• 我想去一趟超市。I want to go to the supermarket. 
• 他上个星期去了一趟上海。He made a trip to Shanghai last week.
9. 遭(zāo)：indicates the number of times a journey is taken.
• 他很想去一遭北京。He really wants to make a trip to Beijing.
• 如果你想去超市，那我们就晚上走一遭吧。If you want to go to the supermarket, let's go there tonight.
10. 阵(zhèn)：indicates that an action took up only a short period of time.

• 这个问题很难， 我得想一阵。This question is very difficult. I have to think for a little while.
• 今天下了一阵雨。It rained for a little while today.
