prefix 好hǎo- and 难nán-

好hǎo- and 难nán- can be used as prefixes but they have opposite meanings. 好hǎo means good and well; 难nán means hard and difficult. As prefixes, they both can be added to the same set of verbs to form adjectives. Here are some examples:


  • 好看hǎokàn: good look = pretty 
  • 难看nánkàn: hard look = ugly
  • 好听hǎotīng: good listen = euphonious 
  • 难听nántīng: hard listen = cacophonous 
  • 好闻hǎo wén: good smell = fragrant 
  • 难闻nán wén: hard smell = smelly
  • 好吃hào chī: good eat = tasty
  • 难吃nán chī: hard eat = unpalatable 
  • 好用hǎo yòng: good use = easy to use
  • 难用nán yòng: hard use = hard to use
  • 好受hǎoshòu: good sustain = comfortable 
  • 难受nánshòu: hard sustain = miserable
