CULTURE NOTES

Unlike English, kinship terms in Mandarin differentiate whether the relative is older or younger, and the paternal or maternal. For example, in Mandarin, the paternal grandma is ______ and the maternal grandma is 姥姥 (northern dialect) or 外婆 (southern dialect).
